With the temperatures rising to almost 40 C, birding is not at its best this time of year. However, areas like Mt Antichasia in central Greece, very close to the very famous area of Meteora, have many beautiful species to offer. First of all, the Egyptian Vulture still breeds in the area, and with a little luck one can see the smallest and most endangered vulture of Greece. Furthermore, many other raptors like Lesser Spotted, Booted and Short-toed Eagle, Long-legged Buzzard, Black Kite and Levant Sparrowhawk are also nesting in good numbers. Along with them, small groups of Eleonora's Falcons are foraging the slopes.
It is also one of the best places to see the Black Stork (many pairs nest in the area, including the rocks of Meteora) and the Roller, perching in wires along the valley of Ionas river.
All in all, the area can be very attractive for visitors that want to combine nature and history. It is merely a four hour drive from Athens, and the nearby cities of Trikala and Kalampaka offer a great variety of hotels and restaurants to cover all your needs!
