Urban Birding in Athens: Sept 28th Trip report

Birding in Athens: 36 Species Spotted in Tritsis Metropolitan Park

Athens may be famous for its ancient history, but it also offers an unexpected haven for birders. On a recent birding tour at Tritsis Metropolitan Park, just outside the city center, we explored this rich urban ecosystem with two birders from the USA. Over a three-hour hike, we were treated to an exciting variety of birds, spotting a total of 36 species. The park’s diverse habitats—from water ponds to fields and forested areas—made for a truly rewarding birdwatching experience.

Diverse Habitats, Diverse Species

Tritsis Park is a prime example of how different ecosystems can thrive in an urban setting. As we moved through its wetlands, open fields, and wooded areas, we observed species adapted to each environment. These varied habitats not only support local birdlife but also serve as a vital stopover for migratory species.

Trip Highlights: Wrynecks and Kingfishers

Our day kicked off with an exciting sighting of two Wrynecks—a migratory woodpecker species that can be difficult to spot. Their cryptic plumage and unique behavior made them one of the most thrilling finds of the day.

Near one of the park's ponds, we encountered a family of Eurasian Kingfishers. Watching these colorful birds dart across the water to catch fish was a true highlight for our visiting birders. Kingfishers are always a favorite due to their brilliant blue and orange plumage.

Raptors and Shrikes

Our raptor sighting of the day was a Sparrowhawk soaring overhead. These agile hunters are common in urban parks but still provide an impressive display when spotted.

Another special moment came when we found an adult Red-backed Shrike perched gracefully on a shrub. Shrikes are known for their distinctive hunting behavior and striking appearance, and this individual did not disappoint.

Other Notable Species

While the Wrynecks and Kingfishers stole the show, there were plenty of other memorable sightings. We spotted 15 Black-crowned Night Herons, an impressive number for this species, typically seen roosting quietly around the ponds.

Long-tailed Tits and Willow Warblers flitted around the wooded areas, providing constant activity and adding charm to the forested sections of the park. The delicate Sardinian Warbler, common in Mediterranean landscapes, was another delightful species we encountered during our walk.

Apart from birds, we also spotted several Marginated Toirtoises and a nice Balkan Green Lizard.

Our USA guests were thrilled by the variety and quality of the sightings, and with 36 species observed in just three hours, it’s easy to see why Tritsis Park is becoming a must-visit location for birdwatching in Greece.
