A Quest for the Elusive Olive-tree Warbler: A Tailor-Made Adventure in Evia

The Olive-tree Warbler (Hippolais olivetorum) is one of Europe's most elusive breeding birds. With its limited distribution, confined mainly to the southeastern Balkans and a few scattered areas in Greece, this large warbler is a target species for many birders. However, it's not just its rarity that makes it difficult to find—its secretive behavior, brief vocal activity window, and preference for dense, scrubby olive groves mean that even seasoned birders can search for days without a glimpse.

The Holy Grail for any birder,
the elusive Olive-tree Warbler

This spring, we had the unique opportunity to design a bespoke tour focused entirely on this challenging species. Our guest was none other than Giancarlo Marconi, the President of the Zoological Society of Bologna and a lifelong birder. Giancarlo has spent decades photographing every bird species of the Western Palearctic—over 1,200 in total. With just three species left on his list, the Olive-tree Warbler was a major milestone.

We crafted a highly focused itinerary to give Giancarlo the best possible chance. Our destination: the island of Evia, Greece, where discreet groves of ancient olive trees provide the perfect breeding habitat for this cryptic warbler.

Upon arriving at a well-researched location, we located the bird quickly—but seeing it well, let alone photographing it, was another matter entirely. We spent over six hours quietly positioned in an old olive orchard, listening intently for its brief bursts of song and waiting for the right moment. Eventually, patience paid off: we managed not only several sightings but also a series of decent photographs, capturing this shy species in its Mediterranean habitat.

The weekend in Evia was a birding delight beyond the warbler. We were treated to spectacular views of Red-footed Falcons, Scopolis's Shearwaters, Lesser Kestrels, Eastern Subalpine Warblers, Cretzschmar’s Bunting, Eastern Black-eared Wheatears, and many other jewels of the Mediterranean spring migration.

This tour was a reminder of why we do what we do—crafting meaningful, species-focused experiences for passionate birders. Whether you're chasing a long-awaited lifer or aiming for that perfect photograph, we’re here to make it happen.
