From Acropolis to Your Backyard: Birding Adventures in Athens

Birding in our garden in Rafina, Athens offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature, even within the bustling city. A fascinating resident in our neighbourhood is the Little Owl. Known for its endearing appearance with large, piercing eyes and compact size, the Little Owl is a symbol of wisdom in Greek mythology. These owls are often seen perched on walls or rooftops during dusk, silently watching over their territory. Their calls, a series of soft hoots, add an enchanting atmosphere to your garden, especially during the quieter evening hours. We often watch it from our balcony, when perching on the neighboor's old TV antennae

One of the delightful residents we encounter during the summer is the Eastern Olivaceous Warbler. This small, delicate bird, with its subtle olive-green plumage and distinctive melodic song, is a common sight in gardens with plenty of shrubs and trees. The warbler’s cheerful presence is especially noticeable in the warmer months, as it flits between branches in search of insects.

Easily recognized by its bright yellow breast and bold black head, the Great Tit is a frequent visitor to feeders and is known for its diverse vocalizations. It’s a resilient species that thrives in various habitats, making it a regular companion in gardens across Athens.
