Philopappos Hill – Birdwatching in the Heart of Athens
Philopappos Hill is one of the best places for a short birding experience in Athens. Just a few minutes from the Acropolis and Plaka district, the hill offers a surprising combination of wild Mediterranean habitat, rocky landscapes, native vegetation and birds, surrounded by one of Europe’s most historic cities.
During our two-hour walk, we explore the paths and rocky slopes of the hill, looking for birds in the shrubs, trees and open areas. The setting is particularly rewarding for visitors who want to experience some genuine Greek nature without leaving the city.
And the scenery is exceptional. Along the route, there are unique views of the Acropolis, the historic centre and the wider city of Athens, making this a birding walk with a distinctly Athenian character.
